– who lives in our ponds and lakes and how do they interact with each other?
by Alex Chen
Central Ohio has many freshwater lakes and ponds. These freshwater habitats accommodate a variety of organisms, some of which you will be familiar while others you may have yet to encounter. While some organisms permanently live in the water, others temporarily use aquatic environments as a habitat during part of their life history. More interestingly, whether they reside in the water permanently or temporarily, they often interact with each other and establish a dynamic balance in the ecosystem. Here I introduce some organisms you most likely will observe in central Ohio’s lakes or ponds, and discuss some of their common interactions.
